The Flight Path

The QFE Flight Pathway

A developmental journey from early foundations to confident, independent learning.

Children do not learn in straight lines. They grow in stages.

The QFE Flight Pathway reflects this natural progression — guiding children from early foundations through to confidence, reasoning, and mastery.

Each stage reflects a child’s development — not their age.

Children progress based on:

  • independence
  • reasoning ability
  • depth of understanding

This allows us to meet children exactly where they are, while providing a clear and structured pathway forward.

Stage Breakdown

A closer look at each stage

Each level is designed to build steadily on the one before it, creating a structured and intentional route through learning.

Hatchling owl stage

Hatchling

Foundations in early learning

This stage focuses on helping children feel secure in the basics, so early learning feels clear, manageable, and positive from the very beginning.

  • phonics and early reading
  • number sense
  • confidence building

Typical lesson length

Hatchling sessions are intentionally kept short, focused, and developmentally appropriate so early learning feels manageable, secure, and purposeful.

Fledgling owl stage

Fledgling

Growing confidence and early independence

Children begin to apply what they know with more consistency, building fluency through repetition, encouragement, and carefully structured teaching.

  • early fluency
  • simple reasoning
  • structured practice

Typical lesson length

Phonics sessions remain 25 minutes; most broader lessons are 45–50 minutes.

Owlet owl stage

Owlet

Developing understanding and deeper thinking

At this stage, children begin making stronger connections across what they are learning, developing greater understanding and a more thoughtful approach.

  • comprehension
  • structured writing
  • problem-solving

Typical lesson length

Most lessons at this stage are 45–50 minutes.

Skywise Owl owl stage

Skywise Owl

Expanding reasoning and application

Learners start to work with more complexity, explain their thinking more clearly, and use strategies with increasing flexibility and purpose.

  • multi-step thinking
  • explaining ideas
  • flexible strategies

Typical lesson length

Most lessons at this stage are 45–50 minutes.

Scholar owl stage

Scholar

Higher-order thinking and academic maturity

This stage supports children as they work with more sophisticated ideas, stronger reasoning, and a growing ability to think carefully and independently.

  • analysing
  • reasoning
  • working with complexity

Typical lesson length

Most lessons at this stage are 45–50 minutes.

Sage owl stage

Sage

Advanced understanding and independence

Children at Sage level are refining their thinking, working with greater precision, and approaching challenge with secure understanding.

  • refined thinking
  • precision
  • confident problem-solving

Typical lesson length

Most lessons at this stage are 45–50 minutes.

Luminary owl stage

Luminary

Mastery and readiness for high-level learning

Luminary prepares learners for the next stage beyond the core pathway, strengthening reasoning, independence, and readiness for advanced study.

  • strong reasoning
  • independence
  • preparation for advanced study

Typical lesson length

Most lessons at this stage are 45–50 minutes.

A Flexible Pathway

Progression based on readiness, not time

Children may be at different stages across subjects, and this is both expected and appropriate.

Children may be at different stages across subjects.

For example:

  • Fledgling in Reading
  • Sage in Maths

This is expected and appropriate.

Progression is based on readiness, not time.

Coming Soon

Coming Soon: The High Flight Path

Independent learning for confident, capable learners.

The High Flight Path will extend beyond Luminary.

This stage will focus on:

  • independent study
  • deeper thinking
  • self-guided learning
  • advanced academic skills

It is designed for learners who are ready to take full ownership of their learning journey.
