Phase 5 Phonics (Part 2)

Part 2: Understanding Alternative Spellings and Advanced Phonics Patterns
Phase 5 Part 2 is where children begin developing a deeper understanding of how English spelling works. During this stage, children learn that the same sound can often be represented by different graphemes and spelling patterns.
Children move beyond simple decoding and begin developing greater flexibility, spelling awareness, fluency, and automaticity when reading and writing increasingly complex words.
Throughout this phase, children explore alternative spellings for known sounds, including:
- /ai/ → ai, ay, a_e, eigh, ey, a
- /ee/ → ee, ea, ey, e_e, e, ie, y
- /igh/ → igh, ie, i_e, y, i
- /oa/ → oa, oe, o_e, ow, o, ough
- /oo/ → oo, ue, u_e, ew, o, ui
- /yoo/ → ue, ew, u_e, u, eu
- /ow/ → ow, ou, ough
- /oi/ → oi, oy
- /ar/ → ar, a, ear
- /er/ → ur, ir, er, or, ear
- /air/ → air, are, ere, ear
- /ear/ → ear, eer, ere
- /or/ → or, aw, au, al, a, our, augh, ough
- /u/ → u, ou, oo
Children also explore increasingly advanced consonant spellings and patterns, including:
- /j/ → j, g, ge, dge
- /s/ → s, c, ss, se, ce, sc, st
- /c/ → c, k, ck, ch
- /f/ → f, ff, ph, gh
- /n/ → n, kn, gn
- /l/ → l, ll, le, al, el, il
- /ch/ → ch, tch, ture
As children progress through the phase, they begin recognising that spelling is not always predictable. They learn how to compare spelling patterns, notice common rules, identify exceptions, and apply increasingly sophisticated phonics knowledge independently when reading and spelling.
This module has been carefully designed to strengthen decoding, fluency, spelling accuracy, comprehension, vocabulary development, and spelling decision-making through structured teacher-led instruction, modelling, repetition, guided practice, reading application, and independent tasks.
At QFE, we understand that becoming a confident reader and writer requires more than simply memorising words. Children need explicit teaching, pattern recognition, repeated exposure, and carefully structured practice to become fluent, flexible, and independent readers and spellers.
Phase 5 Part 2 focuses heavily on helping children move from decoding words slowly towards reading and spelling with increasing automaticity, confidence, understanding, and spelling awareness.
Every lesson is:
- carefully sequenced
- developmentally aligned
- teacher-led
- structured to build fluency and spelling understanding gradually
- focused on understanding patterns, not memorisation alone
- designed to strengthen confidence alongside reading skill
- rooted in explicit teaching and guided application
Children are guided step-by-step through increasingly complex spelling systems using direct instruction, repetition, modelling, fluency practice, reading application, spelling comparison tasks, phoneme spotters, and structured independent activities.
The programme follows a consistent lesson structure to reduce overwhelm and help children feel secure as they begin navigating more advanced phonics and spelling concepts.
At QFE, we prioritise confidence before curriculum because children learn best when they feel safe, supported, and capable.

Purpose
The purpose of this course is to help children:
- recognise and apply alternative spellings for known sounds
- understand that one sound can have multiple graphemes
- strengthen spelling accuracy and spelling decision-making
- compare spelling patterns and identify similarities between words
- develop flexible decoding strategies
- improve fluency and automaticity when reading longer words
- strengthen comprehension and understanding during reading activities
- build confidence when approaching unfamiliar vocabulary
- develop greater independence during reading and spelling tasks
- strengthen vocabulary, fluency, and spelling confidence
The course is carefully sequenced to ensure children revisit, compare, apply, and consolidate phonics knowledge regularly so that reading and spelling become increasingly secure, fluent, and automatic over time.
Outcomes
By the end of this module, children will be able to:
- recognise and apply a wide range of alternative graphemes
- understand that the same sound can have multiple spellings
- read and spell words containing a variety of advanced spelling patterns
- apply increasingly accurate spelling choices
- recognise common spelling rules and patterns
- identify some less common and irregular spelling choices
- read longer and more complex decodable words with improved fluency
- use syllables and larger word chunks to support decoding
- read decodable texts with greater fluency, confidence, and understanding
- answer comprehension and inference questions about texts
- apply taught phonics knowledge within structured reading and writing activities
- develop greater independence when reading and spelling unfamiliar words
