Phonics Consultation & Assessment

Not sure which phonics course is right for your child?

Our Phonics Consultation & Assessment is designed to help parents understand where their child currently is in their reading journey and which QFE pathway or phonics phase would best support them.

During the assessment, we gently explore your child’s:

letter sound recognition
blending skills
segmenting skills
reading fluency
confidence when reading
ability to apply phonics independently
gaps or areas needing reinforcement

This allows us to identify both strengths and learning gaps so your child can be placed into the most appropriate course with confidence.

At QFE Academy, we believe children make the best progress when learning is matched to their developmental stage — not rushed or based purely on age.

Following the consultation, parents will receive:

recommended course placement
feedback on current phonics understanding
areas of strength
key gaps to work on
guidance on next steps and support strategies

Please do not worry if your child is still very early in their reading journey — this is completely normal and exactly why the consultation exists.

The assessment is designed to feel calm, supportive, and pressure-free. We are not expecting perfection, and children are never judged based on what they cannot yet do.

Nothing is required beforehand.

Your child does not need to prepare, revise, or complete anything in advance.

The consultation simply helps us understand:

what your child already knows
what they may still need support with
where they will feel most confident learning

Many children assessed are still developing early phonics confidence, blending skills, or sound recognition, and this is fully expected.

Our goal is to ensure children begin in a course where they feel secure, capable, and supported — because confidence always comes before progress.
